Trainers get the headlines, but jockeys matter. A well-judged ride can be the difference between winning and finishing fourth. Our analysis of over 50,000 rides at Britain’s major tracks reveals which jockeys genuinely add value at specific courses.
William Buick stands out as the most reliable value-add across multiple venues. At Kempton, he rides 29.71% winners from 239 mounts. At Newmarket, that figure is 29.42% from 537 rides. These are not small samples skewed by a hot streak—they are sustained excellence over four years.
Buick’s Haydock record is equally impressive at 31.33% (26 wins from 83 rides). His average starting price across these three tracks sits between 5.4/1 and 7.4/1, proving he delivers without relying on short-priced favourites.
Paul Townend’s Cheltenham numbers demand attention. His 29.73% strike rate (22 wins from 74 rides) is exceptional at a track where many Irish jockeys struggle with the unique challenges of Prestbury Park. Townend’s patient style suits Cheltenham’s emphasis on jumping and timing rather than raw speed.
Charlie Deutsch has carved out a remarkable niche at Ascot, riding 34.15% winners (14 from 41). That is the highest strike rate in our entire dataset for jockeys with 30+ rides at a single track. His aggressive front-running style works on Ascot’s galloping straights where others might get swamped.
Ben Jones matches Deutsch’s aggression at Kempton, where his 33.33% strike rate (14 from 42) makes him a serious threat in the evening fixtures. Kempton’s tight turns reward riders who are positive from the gates.
Nico de Boinville’s 25.53% at Kempton (24 wins from 94) shows he can deliver outside the Henderson stronghold of Cheltenham and Newbury. His partnership with the trainer’s second-stringers often goes under the radar.
Brendan Powell’s 26.09% at Ascot (12 from 46) suggests he has learned from his father—a former king of the Royal meeting. The Powells understand how to ride Ascot’s demanding track better than most.
Oisin Murphy’s 24.59% at Haydock (15 from 61) is notable because it defies the perception that Murphy is purely a Flat specialist. His ability on testing ground at the Lancashire track makes him dangerous in the autumn months.
What unites these riders is their understanding of specific track demands. Buick times his challenges perfectly on Newmarket’s undulating course. Townend waits longer than most at Cheltenham before asking for effort. Deutsch commits early at Ascot and dares others to catch him.
The market has started pricing some of these trends in—Buick and Townend rarely offer value on paper. But Jones, Powell, and Deutsch still operate under the radar often enough to reward close attention.
When studying the runners, check who is booked. A jockey-track combination with a 30%+ strike rate is not coincidence. It is a repeatable edge.
