What the Data Says
The Fred Winter was a notoriously difficult race to solve. The average winning SP of around 21/1 tells you everything — this was one of the most unpredictable races at the Festival. Three of the last four editions produced 25/1+ winners.
Nicholls’ 3 wins from 19 was the best record, and his winners tended to come at shorter prices (Sanctuaire at 4/1, Diego Du Charmil at 15/2). Elliott’s wins came at much bigger prices (Veneer Of Charm and Flaxen Flare both at 25/1+).
The race has since been replaced by the Boodles Juvenile Handicap Hurdle, which carries a similar profile. If you’re looking at the Boodles, this historical data gives useful context — expect big-priced winners and don’t trust the favourite.
